Tuesday December 18th, 2001 will be a day that our community will never forget.
For this is the very sad day when the Cathedral of St. John Divine lost a wing of this historic house of worship.
The fire broke out in the gift shop at the rear of the church at 6:42 a.m. and went to a five alarm alert.
Firefighters prevented the blaze from getting out of their reach into the roof and from spreading to the main body of the cathedral.
The facade of the main body is intact, but there was heavy smoke damage inside.
Amazingly, there were no reported injuries.
