This practice dates from the 7th century and began for the utilitarian purpose of cleaning and washing the church in preparation for Easter. But the stark, bare church reflected so clearly the fitting tone of the occasion that the stripping became a ceremony in its own right. The Altar represents the body of Christ and in washing it we prepare for Our Lord's death and burial in the tomb. If you would like to participate please come to the Chapel of St Saviour at the conclusion of the service. |

| ~~~ | Spiritual OpportunityMaundy Thursday is a time to watch and wait with Christ. The custom of spending time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament arose from the desire of devout souls to give an affirmative answer to the sorrowful question of the Saviour in Gethsemane, "Could you not watch with me one hour?" We will sign up for two hour intervals, two or more people at a time, and pray and vigil together until Morning Prayer. Stay for two hours or the whole night! If you would like to be part of an all night vigil to watch with Christ that night, please contact Patricia Miranda at 212-740-4867 or email her at mirarts@aol.com |
